Who is Alter Dvoretsky? Is he a Nazi? A Nazi leader? No, he is a strong powerful Jewish resistance leader, an important person to the ghetto residents of the Zdzięcioł (Zhetel) Ghetto during the Holocaust. As you guys all know what the Holocaust was, a genocide by the Germans (Nazis and Hitler) aimed mostly for Jews and others such as Gypsies, the elders, disabled, sick, homosexuals and others. But what was Alter's part in the Holocaust? Well, he was the head behind the Jewish resistance in the Zhetel ghetto. He organized a group which helped plan and save the ghetto residents. He was part of a council called the Judenrat council and was the head (chairman) of the council. His experiences from before the Holocaust began, (he was a lawyer and was known in public events), helped him decide, plan and lead the ghetto residents against the Nazis. He was successful in helping the residents escape the ghetto, along with himself and the Judenrat. In one incident, Alter was arrested with the Rabbi, Jankel Kaplen and some others. After they got arrested, the local Jews who supported Alter and the Rabbi, bribed the Germans to release them both. After they got released, the Germans took the others who were arrested away for forced labor. But then it was founded out that the Germans actually took them to the forest near the military barracks and killed them. When the local Jews bribed the Germans to release Alter and the Rabbi, it shows that the local Jews were supportive of Alter and wanted him alive to probably lead them in the future through the dark times ahead. That proves that he is important to them. He has authority since he is the head of the Judenrat council and makes him "important" to the Germans who are in charge of the ghetto too. He is "important" to them, because his job as the chairman of the Judenrat gives him the responsibility to make sure that the ghetto residents are following the Germans' rules. If the ghetto residents don't follow their rules, the boss of the Nazis that are in charge of the Zhetel ghetto, will get angry at them and might punish them so the Nazis in charge rely on Alter to enforce their rules from the inside. Although Alter did what was told and followed through his responsibility, he also multitasked by "enforcing" their rules while he encouraged the Jews and others to resist and fight against the Germans. He built a resistance from the inside while tricking the Germans in charge of the ghetto into believing that he was following their orders and his responsibility. Below is a picture of Alter Dvoretsky:
